Fresh transfer speculation has emerged linking Sandro Tonali with a potential move to Chelsea, with reports suggesting the Newcastle United midfielder has “sounded out” the London club ahead of a possible summer switch.
According to TEAMtalk, Tonali’s camp have explored the possibility of a move to Stamford Bridge as uncertainty grows over his long-term future on Tyneside. The Italian international is understood to be assessing his options amid Newcastle’s inconsistent campaign and doubts over their ability to secure European football next season
The midfielder, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a high-profile 2023 transfer, remains one of the club’s most valuable assets. However, reports indicate that multiple elite clubs—including CHELSEA—have been contacted, with Newcastle likely to demand a fee in the region of £100 million should they consider a sale.
Chelsea’s interest is not new. The club have been monitoring Tonali as part of a broader midfield review, with recruitment staff said to admire his leadership, technical quality, and ability to dictate tempo. With ongoing speculation surrounding key figures in their midfield, the Blues could be preparing for a significant reshuffle this summer.

Could Tonali Replace Enzo?
The rumours gain further traction amid reports that Enzo Fernández could be the subject of summer interest, prompting debate over whether Tonali would represent an ideal replacement.
From a tactical perspective, the two players offer different profiles. Fernández is known for his progressive passing and creative influence in advanced areas, whereas Tonali brings a more balanced, box-to-box presence—combining defensive work rate with composure in possession.
For CHELSEA, Tonali could provide greater physicality and leadership in midfield, attributes that have occasionally been lacking during periods of inconsistency. His experience in both Serie A and the Premier League also adds to his appeal, particularly for a squad still developing cohesion.
However, replacing Fernández like-for-like would be difficult. Tonali’s strengths lie deeper in midfield, meaning Chelsea might need additional reinforcements to replicate Fernández’s attacking output.
