Browns GM Andrew Berry Brings Bad News for Shedeur Sanders

Looks like Shedeur Sanders may not have a clear runway to the Browns QB1 job. The former Colorado star entered the offseason believing he would compete with Deshaun Watson. Browns general manager Andrew Berry revealed that another quarterback addition remains on the table.

Speaking at the NFL owners meetings, Berry admitted it is “wholly realistic” that Cleveland may add another signal-caller before training camp. More importantly, he hinted that the Browns are likely targeting a younger quarterback rather than a veteran stopgap.

“Our lean would be if we do add someone to the quarterback room, it would be someone who’s a younger player, most likely,” Berry told Mary Kay Cabot. “But I can’t state that definitively because I don’t know what the next couple of weeks will hold. Anyone that we bring in at any spot on the roster, our thought is that they’re competing. They’re competing to play. They have something that we like in their skill set. And our expectation would be for them to work harder.”

That is bad news for Sanders, whose climb toward QB1 already appears steep. Berry made it clear the rookie still has plenty to prove in Cleveland’s new offense.

“I think that’s a little bit TBD, because I think all of our guys coming in, they’re going to learn a new offensive system. We’re going to have a fair amount of turnover on that side of the ball, they’ll have new teammates to learn, which is why the spring will be really important for the guys that are at the offseason program for us to really, really get a sense of their progress year over year. But he’s been working really hard. I would expect him to take a step forward, and we’ll deal with that kind of week-by-week and month-by-month.”

The Browns have also been linked to Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Berry acknowledged the team’s interest, saying, “I think he has a bright NFL future.”

Myles Garrett Gets Clarity on Browns Future From Andrew Berry

Trade speculation around Myles Garrett exploded after the Cleveland Browns adjusted the pass rusher’s contract. The front office led by Andrew Berry moved his option bonus payment from late March to early September. The tweak did not create meaningful salary-cap relief, which is why many fans believed the Browns were positioning themselves for a trade involving Garrett.

The reigning DPOY is coming off a 23-sack season and remains one of the league’s premier defenders at age 30. At the NFL Owners Meetings in Phoenix, Berry tried to slam the brakes on the chatter.

“I guess probably the easiest thing to say is, if we wanted to trade Myles, we wouldn’t need to make a contract adjustment,” Berry said. “Myles is a career Brown… He is one of the faces of our organization.”

Still, Berry noticeably avoided giving the same emphatic “not happening” message he used in 2025. That has left the door cracked open, especially with Garrett owning two Defensive Player of the Year awards and enough value to command at least two first-round picks in any deal.
