Steelers Urged to Sign Former First-Round Pick Ahead of NFL Draft

ESPN's Dan Graziano included Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf on a list of potential offseason trade candidates.

Less than a month away from the NFL Draft, which will take place in the city of Pittsburgh, the Steelers could still be looking to address a position or two via free agency. While the franchise currently holds 12 total picks in the upcoming draft, including seven within the first four rounds, adding another experienced NFL player could not hurt at all.

In fact, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport believes the Steelers could add another protector along the offensive line. That protector could be former Super Bowl champion offensive lineman Mekhi Becton.

The Pittsburgh Steelers Still Need to Address the Offensive Line

GettySteelers GM Omar Khan is looking to win his first Super Bowl in his current role with the organization.

While the quarterback position has been a bit of a merry-go-round ever since future Hall of Fame quarterback Ben Roethlisberger retired after the 2021 season, the offensive line has been playing musical chairs too. This offseason has been no different. Pittsburgh signed interior lineman Jack Driscoll, as well as tackle Brock Hoffman. However, the team did lose veterans Isaac Seumalo and Dan Moore Jr. to new teams.

Currently, the Steelers have over $27 million in cap space. That means they certainly have room to make another free-agent signing, particularly along the offensive line. This is where Becton could come in. Here is what Davenport had to say about why the former 11th overall pick makes sense in Pittsburgh:

“It’s possible the Steelers could use the 21st overall pick on a lineman. But the team has other neeeds on both sides of the ball, and the interior linemen still on the market should be available at something of a discount – including guard Mekhi Becton. Becton’s 2025 season was a letdown compared to the year before. But he’s still just 26 years old and the 6’7″ 363-pounder has the frame to be an absolute bulldozer.”

Even though the Steelers would be Becton’s fourth different team in the last four years if they signed him, he has a solid blend of youth and experience that new head coach Mike McCarthy could covet. Furthermore, he was teammates with Steelers free-agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2023.

Aaron Rodgers Would Benefit From This Signing

Aaron Rodgers, Pittsburgh Steelers

GettyIf Aaron Rodgers returns to play for the Steelers in 2026, it will be his 22nd career season in the NFL.

Rodgers is the one major domino that has yet to fall this offseason in Pittsburgh. While he could make his decision on his future in the next few weeks, it is unknown whether or not he will be back to play for the Steelers. But make no mistake about it, if the Steelers were to sign Becton, the four-time MVP in Rodgers could feel more comfortable in the pocket.

Since missing the entire 2022 season due to injury, Becton has started 50 total games, including playoffs. Bringing him to the Steel City on a one-year deal would have little-to-know risk. At worst, the move would add more competition to the offensive line group.

Becton or no Becton, Rodgers is still the biggest x-factor surrounding the organization right now. After guiding the Steelers to their first AFC North title in five seasons in 2025, he has a chance to play for his former head coach in McCarthy and take the team even further in 2026.
