“Much closer” – Chelsea star transfer seen as likelier scenario as exit closes in

Enzo Fernandez

London, United Kingdom – 09 30 2025: Enzo Fernandez seen during Champions League league phase game between Chelsea FC and SL Benfica

Chelsea are once again facing growing noise around Enzo Fernández and a potential move away from Stamford Bridge, with fresh claims from Spain suggesting the situation is shifting quickly.

The midfielder has already been linked with Real Madrid in recent days. Earlier reports positioned him as one of several options, with Rodri seen as the priority target. However, that stance now appears to be changing.

This follows earlier updates covered this morning, where Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo described Fernández as a “guaranteed signing” profile for Madrid, highlighting both his leadership and World Cup pedigree. At that stage, though, he was still framed as an alternative rather than the main focus.

Shift in Real Madrid thinking

According to journalist Raúl Varela, speaking on Marca Radio, the situation has now tilted significantly in Fernández’s favour.

He stated: “Enzo is much closer to Madrid, Rodri has no chance of going to Madrid. Today, the president does not want to sign Rodri.”

That is a strong claim, especially given Rodri had been widely viewed as the ideal midfield addition. The reasoning appears to be both financial and strategic, with age and long-term value playing a role.

Enzo Fernández comments and reaction

Enzo Fernández’s own words have also added fuel. As we covered earlier, he said he would “really like” to live in Madrid.

That comment has not gone unnoticed. Another Marca journalist, Irene Junquera, suggested the midfielder may not feel fully comfortable in London and is open to change. She added that such remarks are unlikely to have been well received internally at Chelsea.

That may not be entirely true. In the same podcast he spoke about the prospect of living in Madrid, Enzo said: “I like the language [English]. I speak it, I understand it. It’s not like I’m walking around the street all day either. But inside the club I speak it every day with everyone”.

Either way, other voices on the same programme took a more football-focused view. Journalist Amalio Moratalla highlighted Fernández’s quality and suitability for Madrid.

“He’s a top-level player who would definitely fit in at Real Madrid; the question is what price Chelsea would set and what effort Real Madrid would have to make,” he said.

While Nacho Palencia pointed to the appeal of joining a club of that stature.

“It’s Real Madrid that wants you, not Antequera [an amateur level side from Spain]. It’s a very favorable situation for the player and his family, and Madrid needs a player of that profile; it would be a very beneficial deal for both parties.”

What this means for Chelsea

Enzo Fernández remains under contract at Chelsea until 2032, and his current market value sits around €90m (£77m) according to Transfermarkt. However, given Chelsea paid €123m (£106.8m), any deal may need to exceed that figure.

Chelsea are therefore still in a strong position. Yet the narrative is evolving. Earlier reports framed Madrid’s interest as exploratory. Now, at least in Spain, there is growing confidence that Fernández is the more realistic signing.

For now, there is no confirmation of formal talks. Still, the combination of player comments, media backing and shifting priorities in Madrid keeps this firmly alive.

What happens next

Enzo Fernández’s situation looks set to become one of the summer’s key storylines.

If Real Madrid move decisively, Chelsea will face a major decision. They can either resist and build around him, or consider a sale that reshapes their midfield again.

Much may depend on timing. Fernández has previously said he will assess his future after the World Cup. Until then, Chelsea are likely to face continued noise – and increasing pressure – around one of their biggest investments.
