Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has once again cast a thick cloud of doubt over his future at Stamford Bridge with yet another provocative interview while on international duty with Argentina. When the 25-year-old World Cup winner talked about how he felt about Madrid during a recent livestream, he did very little to calm the rumours about a possible exit.
This comes just two weeks after the Argentine upset Chelsea fans by telling a reporter that he didn’t know what his future held after the Blues lost 8-2 on aggregate to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Liam Rosenior, his manager, acted quickly to put out the fire, saying he had spoken at length with Fernandez before training and that the midfielder had made it clear he was happy at the club. He said that Fernandez’s earlier comments were due to emotion and translation problems.
But there is no way to defend these new comments, which he made during a calm international break when he didn’t have to worry about a painful loss or Champions League exit:
“I really like Madrid. It’s a beautiful city; it reminds me of Buenos Aires. Players live where they want. I’d live in Madrid. I get by in English, but I’d be more comfortable in Spanish.”
When asked about certain clubs in Madrid, Fernandez just smiled and said nothing. This reaction was more telling than any direct answer could have been.
The midfielder came to Stamford Bridge from Benfica in January 2023 for a then-British record fee of €121 million. He has scored eight goals and assisted three others in 30 Premier League games this season. Along with Real Madrid, he has also been linked to PSG and clubs in Saudi Arabia. Fabrizio Romano says the two sides discussed better contract terms but couldn’t reach an agreement. This means that Fernandez might be open to summer offers.
Real Madrid Prioritize Midfield Signing This Summer as Enzo Fernandez Makes His Feelings Clear
Real Madrid’s top priority for the summer transfer window is to strengthen their midfield, and they already have a number of well-known players in mind. Rodri Hernandez from Manchester City, Kees Smit from AZ Alkmaar, Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace, and Vitinha from PSG are all names that have come up as possible targets.
Los Blancos have been looking for the right player to fill the gap left by the retirements and departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric. They have reportedly looked at both Caicedo and Fernandez. Chelsea are in a strong position to negotiate because Fernandez is under contract until 2032. The Blues are likely to ask for at least the €121 million they paid.
Chelsea are currently sixth in the Premier League with 48 points and have a tough schedule ahead of them. If they don’t qualify for the Champions League, it could be the final straw that pushes Fernandez to leave for the Santiago Bernabeu, which he seems to be actively seeking.
