Why This Veteran Guard Is the Packers’ Most Overpaid Player

The Green Bay Packers continue to evaluate their roster following the early stages of NFL free agency. One player drawing attention in that discussion is veteran guard Aaron Banks, who has been labeled as the team’s most overpaid player.

Banks joined the Packers with expectations of providing stability along the interior offensive line. His contract reflected the team’s confidence in his ability to anchor the unit and contribute consistently.

Despite that investment, questions have emerged about whether his performance has matched his salary. While Banks has delivered solid stretches, critics point to inconsistency as a factor in the evaluation of his value.

The comparison becomes more pronounced when measured against other guards across the league earning similar deals. Teams often expect high-priced linemen to deliver steady production, particularly in both pass protection and run blocking.

Banks was recently identified as the franchise’s most overpaid player. This is detailed more in an analysis by Brad Gagnon for Bleacher Report.

The bar is ridiculously high for Jordan Love and Micah Parsons based on their monster contracts, but neither has disappointed broadly and we wanted to go outside the box a bit more. Enter Banks, a big-money 2025 addition who struggled out of the gate and finished the season ranked 44th among 57 qualified guards at PFF. The 28-year-old has done little in five years to indicate he should be the seventh-highest-paid guard in the league.

For Green Bay, the situation highlights the challenge of balancing financial commitments with on-field results. Maintaining a strong offensive line remains essential, especially as the team continues to build around its developing offense.

As the 2026 NFL season approaches, Banks will have an opportunity to redefine that perception. His performance moving forward could determine whether he is viewed as a key piece of the roster or a contract that no longer aligns with expectations.
