NFL Head Coach Confirms Huge Wide Receiver Trade Is In The Works At Owners Meeting

The annual NFL Owners meeting always gives head coaches around the league an opportunity to talk to the media, reflect on the prior year, and give a glimpse of what is to come. That was no different in 2026 when one current head coach confirmed that a big-time wide receiver trade is on the horizon.

Here are the details.

NFL Head Coach Confirms Wide Receiver Trade In The Works

According to John Lynch, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has played his final game for the 49ers, but he remains on the roster as March draws to a close. However, that will change in the near future:

According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, there’s no timeline in place for that to change either. The 49ers voided the remaining guarantees on Aiyuk’s contract last year, which likely contributes to the team’s decision to keep looking for a potential trade partner rather than simply releasing the wideout.

“Don’thave date,” Shanahan said from the league meetings on Monday, via Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. “Eventually will resolve itself. Hopefully we can get something for it. We’re in no rush. We have to do what’s right for the 49ers.”

Neither the prospect of the 49ers releasing Aiyuk nor the knee injury that limited the receiver to seven 2025 games is likely to do much to help generate trade interest, but the 49ers are content to keep waiting before making any move to jettison him once and for all.

While Aiyuk figured to be on a new team in 2026, Shanahan confirmed it.

The 49ers traded up in the 2020 NFL Draft (from the Vikings) to select Brandon Aiyuk with the 25th pick in the first round. He went to Arizona State in college where he became a star for the university. Throughout his NFL career Aiyuk has accumulated:

69 career games (67 starts)

294 career receptions

4,305 receiving yards

25 receiving touchdowns

The 28-year-old wide receiver will surely get another shot to make an impact in the NFL. Where is the only question.
