A former New York Jets fan favorite has hung up his cleats.

Quarterback Chris Streveler announced his retirement from the game of football in a five-minute and 54-second Instagram video with the caption, “I love you all. Thank you.”

“I love football, but today is my last day as a professional football player. This game has given me opportunities beyond my wildest dreams. This game has challenged me with obstacles that I thought I’d never overcome. This game has forged lifelong bonds with people that I would have never met otherwise,” Streveler said. “I’ve been playing this game since I was eight years old. Today, I’m 31.”

The highlight video he shared on social media included several moments from his tenure with the Jets. He spent 13 months with the Jets from July of 2022 through August of 2023.

A Brief but Impactful Tenure With the Green and White

The former Minnesota and South Dakota prospect wasn’t with the Jets for a long time, but he was there for a good time.

He appeared in two regular-season games and made one start for the Jets during the 2022 season.

Streveler went 10-of-15 for 90 passing yards. He also carried the rock nine times for 54 rushing yards.

In Week 16 of that season, Streveler replaced a struggling Zach Wilson in the lineup mid-game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

However, where he really cut his teeth was in the preseason. The Jets brought Streveler in to be a camp arm in 2022.

Gang Green’s quarterback room consisted of Mike White, Joe Flacco, and Zach Wilson.

Despite that entry point for Streveler, he made the best of the situation. In two of the three preseason games, he orchestrated last-second game-winning drives.

Streveler became a cult fan-favorite for his unique style, toughness, and clutch ability. During that preseason run, he completed 72% of his passes, scored five total touchdowns, threw for 177 passing yards, and added 71 rushing yards on the ground.

Then, head coach Robert Saleh said at the time that it was “probably one of the greatest preseasons in the history of football.”

Streveler Earned National Prominence for His CFL Career

The talented passer went undrafted in 2018. He didn’t get any rookie minicamp invites in the NFL.

If he wanted to continue as a professional quarterback, Streveler had to carve his own path. He did that in the Canadian Football League.

In 2019, he won the Grey Cup for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and led the league in rushing touchdowns. Streveler finished with 726 rushing yards and scored 20 total touchdowns.

That got him on NFL radars.

From 2020 through 2022, Streveler spent time on the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and the Jets. Streveler’s tenure with the Jets was his final run in the NFL.

He did return to the CFL for the final two years of his playing career with the Blue Bombers in 2024-25.

While the talented QB may not be heading for the Pro Football Hall of Fame any time soon, he will live on in Jets fans’ memories as a preseason quarterback hero for the ages.
