Chargers could make shrewd free agent signing for Justin Herbert

The Los Angeles Chargers' offseason approach has confused many, especially when the franchise has clear needs and the cap space to fill them.

Yet, they haven't.

Justin Herbert was sacked 54 times last season, the third-most, so one would think the Chargers might want to invest in the offensive line. They have with Tyler Biadasz and Cole Strange, but far more is needed.

And Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport has just given L.A. an option.

"There was a time when Kevin Zeitler was considered one of the league's best right guards," Davenport wrote. "That may no longer be the case, but the 36-year-old made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and remained effective last year with the Tennessee Titans, especially in pass protection.

"Justin Herbert would no doubt welcome that."

Chargers need to help Herbert

While some fans might scoff at the thought of Zeitler in his latter years coming to be a key piece of Herbert's protection, anything is better than last year, right?

Yes, Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt will be back, and the addition of Biadasz and Strange is fine, but getting more depth and a possible starter in Zeitler isn't a bad option.

Not a household name, but the Chargers shouldn't care. All that should matter is making sure Herbert isn't getting blown up on every play like he was last season.

Zeitler, while not a star, could still provide serviceable protection to Herbert in 2026.
