George Pickens remains a mystery for the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason program despite his massive impact. Coach Brian Schottenheimer has not promised his attendance. This creates heavy anxiety for fans who saw his elite production last year.
His absence might stall the offensive growth. The team needs his talent to repeat its impressive success from the previous season.
Dallas coach lacks word on George Pickens’ offseason arrival
Dallas acquired the wide receiver last May from the Pittsburgh Steelers. They traded the 3rd and 5th round picks for him. Pickens arrived with a difficult reputation. Coach Mike Tomlin previously said Pickens needed to grow up.

The receiver has played one season in Dallas so far. He earned one Pro Bowl selection and 2nd team All-Pro honors. He led the roster with 137 targets. He also recorded 93 receptions and 1429 yards.
Pickens scored 9 touchdowns during his first year with Dallas. These stats made the Cowboys offense one of the best in the NFL. Now the team wants to expand his role even further.
The Cowboys used a $27.3 million franchise tag on him last month. This move stopped him from entering free agency. He has until July 15 to sign a long-term contract extension.
Schottenheimer confirmed he has been in contact with the star recently. “And I haven’t pushed that on him,” Schottenheimer said. “We’re all going through the process.”
The coach noted the calendar shows April is approaching. Official team activities are still 2 weeks away. Schottenheimer stated the situation is voluntary and will play out naturally.
Pickens is currently 25 years old. He could miss organized team activities or training camp. These holdouts usually happen when players want more financial security from their teams.
Internal reports suggest Pickens is already training. He is currently working with quarterback Dak Prescott. They are building chemistry away from the official team facility.
“He’s training with Dak,” Schottenheimer said. “Look, GP loves it here. We love GP. We have plans for GP to be here for a long time.”
Dallas wants Pickens to learn multiple positions this year. They plan to move him around the field. This strategy worked well for CeeDee Lamb in the past.
“Those two guys working together, I think, is going to be huge moving into Year 2,” Schottenheimer said. He values the personal connection between the passer and the catcher.
The receiver had minor issues with meetings and curfews in November. However, the coaches and owners remain positive. They want a long future with the young star.
A player who produces 1429 yards holds all the leverage in negotiations. Dallas must decide if they will pay his price before July 15. Fans now wait to see if talent outweighs the risk of his silence.
