Shedeur Sanders will be entering Year 2 with a fresh look. The Cleveland Browns quarterback is switching from No. 12 to No. 2, the same number he wore during his college days at Colorado while playing under his dad, Deion Sanders.

The Browns announced the jersey change on Monday and shortly after that Sanders also tweeted “#2” on X. Wide receiver DeAndre Carter is no longer on the roster, and the number was available, and Sanders made it his own. However, the NFL fans haven’t been kind to the 24-year-old QB. They wasted no time turning the move into roast material.
One fan said, “Should be 18 same as your QBR.”
Another wrote, “This how many completions you’re gonna throw next year?.”
One X user tweeted, “You don’t need to announce to the world you’re taking a sh*t.”
“Congrats on the number change. Still the same overrated product. Without Dad’s spotlight you’d be a practice squad guy. #2 on the depth chart suits you perfectly,” tweeted another.
One more fan said, “About to play like number 2 💩.”
“Cute number. Too bad your game won’t match it. Backup life incoming 🪑,” commented another.
After taking over as Cleveland’s starter in 2025, Sanders finished with a 3-4 record. He threw for 175 yards per game with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl Games as an alternate, but questions remain around his ability to perform in the NFL. Browns head coach Todd Monken talked about QB1 status at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting.
“We haven’t gotten that far yet,” Monken said.
Now, Sanders must prove the new number comes with new results.

Shedeur Sanders is not being handed the QB1 job on a platter at the Cleveland Browns. However, owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear that Coach Prime’s son is in the mix entering the 2026 NFL season. Haslam praised Sanders’ offseason commitment towards improving his game.
“He’s been in Cleveland most of the winter, and I think that says a lot for his dedication to wanting to be a NFL quarterback,” Haslam said. “His body looks better. I think he’s been working hard.”
Sanders went 3-4 in his seven starts last season and will head into a crowded Browns quarterback competition alongside Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel, and potentially another young passer added in the 2026 NFL Draft. Similar to Browns general manager Andrew Berry, Haslam also refused to name a frontrunner.
“Competition’s good for all of us,” he said. “We’ve got three guys who have been successful at various levels and let’s see how the competition goes.”
The Browns still believe Sanders can take a leap in Year 2.
“I think Shedeur got an education,” Haslam said. “My instincts are he’ll come back ready to play.”
For now, Cleveland’s quarterback picture remains one of the NFL’s biggest storylines heading into camp.
