Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior will be eager to bring in some new faces this summer
Chelsea are keen on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes this summer, according to CaughtOffside. The report adds that the player is ‘highly likely’ to leave Molineux in the next transfer window. Manchester United have also been credited with an interest.
Liam Rosenior’s side are sat in 6th place in the Premier League table. They have lost their last four games on the spin in all competitions. Next up is an FA Cup tie against Port Vale this weekend as they aim to return to winning ways.
Chelsea eye deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes
Chelsea could see Gomes as someone to boost their midfield department. If he joined, he would add more competition and depth to their options in the middle of the park. In addition, he could battle it out with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez for a place in their starting XI.
Gomes, 25, is a Brazil international with 10 caps to his name. He started his career in his native country at Flamengo and rose up through their academy. The Rio de Janeiro-born man was a regular for them at various different youth levels before breaking into the first-team.
He went on to play 122 games and scored four goals. Wolves then came calling in 2023 and he subsequently left South America for a new challenge in England. He hasn’t looked back since and has become one of his current club’s main men, playing 124 matches for them to date and finding the net on eight occasions.
After securing a contract extension for Gomes in April last year, their ex-manager Vitor Pereira, who is now at Nottingham Forest, said at the time: “I’m very happy because Joao is a team player. He gives every time 100 per cent, in training, in the games, and he has the quality to help this team and this club to make the next step.
“At the end of the game he’s given everything for the team, defending, attacking, supporting the teammates, and this is what we need in our team, this is the spirit we need at this club. We must come to Wolverhampton with this hunger, this spirit to help the team, help the club to grow up. He’s very important because he’s a midfielder with physicality and the power to run for 90 minutes, and he’s young. He has big potential and can be a top player.”
