Jake Plummer on Bo Nix: ‘The kid’s clutch’

A lot has been said of the Broncos’ multiple one-score wins and comeback victories last season, thanks to ice-in-his-veins quarterback Bo Nix.

But no one says it quite like Jake Plummer.

”The kid’s clutch,” Plummer [told Casino Guru](https://casino.guru/news/sports-and-betting/exclusive--ex-pro-bowl-qb-jake-plummer-talks-broncos--klint-kubiak-and-the-cold-tub-9459) last month. “You can’t coach that. Coach Payton has no recipe for that. Payton isn’t a good coach at all when it comes to a clutch gene, because there is no coach that can coach that.”

Certain guys “just have it,” says Plummer, who led 24 fourth-quarter comebacks and 30 game-winning drives in his 10-season NFL career, the last four in Denver.

“Bo has the clutch gene. That comes from the player,” Plummer added. “That comes from the DNA inside Bo. Certain guys just have it.”

In fact, Nix actually led the NFL with a record-setting 12 come-from-behind wins in the Broncos’ 2025 season, including six fourth-quarter comebacks (one in the playoffs).

“He scrambles, is smart with the ball. He’s way smarter with the ball than I ever was, even in Year 2,” Plummer said. “There is not much he needs to improve upon, other than getting the ball out on time and even anticipating more.”

And to help with that, former quarterbacks coach and new offensive coordinator Davis Webb will be the key.

Because Webb was the key to Nix having as much success as he did his first two years, says Plummer.

“Bo Nix was unproven, and everyone doubted whether he would be able to do this at the next level. …Davis has been a steady presence for him in that quarterback room. He obviously has a great relationship with Bo.”

”Bo Nix was unproven, and everyone doubted whether he would be able to do this at the next level,” Plummer said. “Your quarterbacks coach is someone you need to feel really comfortable with.”

Plummer noted that the way Nix responded to Webb’s instruction was obvious in the game outcomes.

“Davis has been a steady presence for him in that quarterback room,” Plummer said. “I’m sure coach Payton comes in once in a while, but mostly it’s Davis Webb as the communicator. He obviously has a great relationship with Bo.”

But Nix is not without needed areas of improvement.

”He can throw the ball anywhere, any way, and he’s very accurate when his feet are set and when his feet are not set,” Plummer pointed out. “Multiple times this year we saw him (hesitate) and then go to the same guy. Then it’s not as good of a play. It’s batted down, or it’s just a reception instead of a catch and turn. Those big plays we were lacking.”

But it wasn’t all on Nix.

The Broncos needed more weapons for the quarterback as well, Plummer added.

”They’re going to add some weapons to the offense. They have to,” Plummer told Casino Guru before news broke about the trade for Jaylen Waddle.

“Your No. 1 (receiver) can’t catch a ball and go down on a knee in the middle of the field without getting hit,” Plummer said. “Your No. 1 needs to catch it and say, ‘Alright, which one of you mother f------ wants to get thrown to the ground and get made look like a fool?’ We need that.”
