Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has sparked fresh debate after calling out the contrasting opinions on David Raya. Media widely praise the Arsenal goalkeeper in England but give him less attention in Spain. This difference in views has now become a major point of debate.
Luis de la Fuente recognizes David Raya as world-class
As per reports, the Spanish national team coach spoke in a press conference after Spain’s friendly win over Serbia. During the presser, a journalist questioned Luis de la Fuente’s choice to stick with Unai Simon. The question was whether it was a move to reaffirm the Bilbao keeper’s status as the number one goalkeeper.
De la Fuente reacted by firmly defending Simon’s established football career. He said it would be absurd for him to reaffirm him just because he’s Unai Simon. He asked for respect for the player. On the same topic, he pointed out David Raya. The coach said he was eager for the media to ask about the Arsenal goalie.
He noted the differences in how England receives the player versus how his home country treats him. “In England, they consider him the best goalkeeper in the world, and here nobody talks about him,” De la Fuente says.
Why David Raya is not rated in Spain?
David Raya has been in sensational form for Arsenal this season. He is on the road to join Pepe Reina as the only player to win three consecutive Golden Glove awards. Last season, he broke David Seaman’s clean sheet record held in 1993. He kept 23 clean sheets in his first 50 division games for the London side.
As per stats from Transfermarkt, the Arsenal star has now kept 21 clean sheets across 40 games in all competitions this season. With him in goal, the Gunners are on course for their first Premier League title since 2004.
Despite having these elite numbers, the keeper is not a popular figure in Spain for a number of factors. One of the main reasons is Unai Simon’s indisputable position as the number one goalie for La Roja.
The Bilbao keeper has been the first choice for Spain in their Euro 2024 and Nations League 2022-23 triumphs. Analysts in Spain also suggest that style plays a role at the international level. Coaches often prefer a reliable presence like Unai Simon over a more flashy keeper like David Raya.
Raya has also spent the most of his career in England. He moved from Cornella to Blackburn Rovers as a youth in 2012. This has resulted in limited exposure for him in the Spanish media. Recent praise from media has also focused on other LaLiga goalkeepers. Players like Joan Garcia and Alex Remiro have gained more attention, which has reduced the Gunners’ goalie’s visibility in Spain.
Luis de la Fuente Spoilt for Choice in Goal
Spain’s current goalkeeping pool reflects a modern golden age. There is exceptional depth, with multiple world-class players competing for one spot. Unai Simon remains the first choice.
The Spanish coach highly values Simon for his professional experience and consistency. David Raya closely challenges him. His Golden Glove-winning form at Arsenal has earned him widespread repute as one of the best in England.
Alex Remiro, a key figure at Real Sociedad, further improves the squad’s quality. Joan Garcia has also risen as a major prospect. He’s a strong shot-stopper for Barcelona. Garcia has recorded the best goals-prevented rate among goalkeepers in Europe’s top five leagues.
De la Fuente has defended his selection order by stating that goalkeeping is a special position. It requires a different treatment and level of stability than outfield roles to maintain confidence and security. However, there is hope for Raya. The coach has essentially asked him to remain patient for his chance. He stated, “The others have a lot of talent and class, but everything in its own time”, addressing his backup goalkeepers.
