Marc Cucurella’s interview with the Athletic while on Spain duty has been the big big bombshell news of the day.
The full back has said what fans and pundits have been saying for years: a lack of experience is costing Chelsea in the pursuit of big titles. He also made it very clear that he and other senior figures will consider leaving if they feel they don’t have a chance of winning top trophies.
Chelsea “more stable” under Maresca, struggling with changes
Another angle of attack came against the decision to sack Enzo Maresca, which the full back says destabilised Chelsea and set them back in their development:
“With Enzo Maresca in charge, we were more stable, because we worked together for 18 months,” Cucurella explained.
“If you look at our first pre-season with him [Chelsea won only one of six friendlies]. there were doubts. You need a process for every player to understand what we need to do. In our last months with Maresca, we played almost by heart. If we changed the system, we knew what we had to do. You need that time.
“Look at Arsenal now, who are fighting for every trophy. They’ve been with [Mikel] Arteta for almost seven years and they have not won much. But that trust in the project gives rewards.”
