Everton wanted to sign Chelsea star for £15m in 2019, now he's considered 'best in the world'

Everton had a dreadful summer transfer window in 2019.

Farhad Moshiri spent in excess of £100m on seven new Everton signings for then manager Marco Silva.

Moise Kean was the most expensive acquisition, and Jean-Philippe Gbamin was another costly addition.

Which of these players do you want to see Everton SIGN in 2026?

Both failed to deliver on Merseyside, and the poor window resulted in Silva being sacked just a few months later.

However, it could have been so different had the Toffees managed to get one deal over the line for a Chelsea star.

Everton tried to sign Chelsea star Reece James in 2019

According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton scouted Reece James during his loan spell at Wigan Athletic.

The Toffees were clearly impressed by the young Englishman, as they tried to land his signature when he returned to Chelsea.

The West Londoners valued James at around £15m at that time, which was seen as quite a high figure.

Silva was really keen, but the deal failed to materialise, and he went on to have a sensational season under Frank Lampard.

Which former Everton target do you wish the club had signed? 🫣

Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay.

Everton were forced to pivot to Djibril Sidibe, who didn’t really pull up any trees and was sent back to Monaco at the end of his loan spell.

James has since gone on to become Chelsea captain, and Liam Rosenior recently explained that he is the best right-back in the world.

“I can’t stop smiling because we’ve secured the best player in world football in his position,” Rosenior stated after James’ new contract.

“He’s top. When you meet him or see him from afar, you admire him. He can play many different positions, technically, he can score goals, he defends, his athleticism, has tactical understanding.”

Certainly one that got away from the Toffees.
