One of Chelsea’s most senior players has called out the club chiefs over one of their big decisions.

Chelsea star Marc Cucurella has criticised decisions made by the Chelsea higherups amid frustration over performances in recent weeks. It has been a turbulent few weeks for the Blues, who have fallen six points off the top four and crashed out of the Champions League unceremoniously.

Liam Rosenior enjoyed a positive start after taking over from Enzo Maresca, but he too has now struggled to find any sort of consistency with this Chelsea team.

That might just show that the Chelsea problems are not strictly manager-related, with seemingly everyone on the outside recognising that the issues relate to a lack of polished quality despite the Blues having a plethora of talented young players.

And that sentiment might just stretch to the inside of the club, too, with one of the club’s star players in Marc Cucurella revealing to The Athletic that he wasn’t on board with the Maresca sacking.

“It had a big impact on us,” said the Spaniard. “These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision. To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season.”

Asked about the recent Champions League defeat to PSG that saw the Blues collapse in the second half of the first leg then fail to put up a fight in the second, Cucurella seemed to agree with the notion that this team lacks polished players.

“We lacked experience,” he added. “I understand this is part of the club’s policy, and that they want to take this direction — signing young players and looking to the future. But for all of us who are still here and want to win big things, moments like this make you feel discouraged. To fight for major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions League, you need more.”
