The New York Jets finished with a 3-14 record last season. Head coach Aaron Glenn started quarterback Justin Fields and others at the quarterback position last season. Despite having the second overall pick, New York doesn’t have plans to select a new quarterback this offseason. The Jets decided to trade for Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders.

He is back in New York where his NFL career began. During the 2025 NFL season with the Raiders, Smith completed 67.4% of his passes for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions. He also rushed for 109 yards on 41 carries and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 2.7 yards per carry. Smith is 35 years old. Is there a chance that the Jets can make it back to the playoffs next season and end its long drought?

New York Jets General Manager Darren Mougey and Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn, shake hands as they pose for the press, at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center, Monday, January 27, 2025, in Florham Park. Mougey and Glenn were introduced to the press in their new positions for the first time.
The Jets head coach spoke to reporters about what he feels about Smith being the starting quarterback this season. Glenn said to Rich Cimini of ESPN, “He’s the guy that’s going to lead us to the promised land.” This is a heck of a statement. If anything, a lot of New York fans think that they are going to be bad next season. Some think that Smith is going to lead them to the number one overall pick in the 2027 NFL Draft rather than a Super Bowl title next season.
New York could very well be one of the worst teams in the NFL once again next season. Smith was bad with the Raiders. He led the Raiders to getting the number one pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Las Vegas will be getting its next franchise quarterback potentially with drafting Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The Jets fanbase would love to see their team get to the playoffs next season, but the truth is Smith may lead them to another franchise quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft.
