Travis Kelce has recently committed his future with the Kansas City Chiefs, signing a three-year contract extension before the next season starts. The tight end has spent his entire career with the franchise, with whom he won three Super Bowl titles.

Travis Kelce’s old words about league-wide cannabis use resurfaces

A tweet by MLFootball has gone viral, in which it references Kelce’s discussion about cannabis usage in the NFL. In a June 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, he estimated that around 50 to 80 percent of players in the NFL use cannabis. This was not an official number, but rather his own unofficial opinion. He said the reasons were mainly due to the new NFL rules at the time.

The NFL changed its marijuana policy in 2021 based on the 2020 Collective Bargaining Agreement. Both the NFL and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) agreed to relax the rules around cannabis consumption among players. Testing for THC used to be done around the whole year, but was changed to only being done during a two-week window at the start of training camp in the summer.

First-time positive tests are no longer punished by handing out suspensions, instead shifting towards treatment and fines. Kelce said the new rules allowed everyone to trick the doping tests, “If you just stop in the middle of July, you’re fine. A lot of guys stop a week before and they still pass because everybody’s working out in the heat and sweating their tail off. Nobody’s really getting hit for it anymore.”

Players often use cannabis as a pain management alternative to opioids. Many fans felt that Kelce was being a snitch towards his fellow NFL players and criticized him online.
