Rumor: Jets Linked to Depth Wide Receiver via Trade

The Jets have accomplished a lot of what they set out to do this offseason. They secured a starting quarterback in Geno Smith, functional safeties in Minkah Fitzpatrick and Dane Belton, and premier leadership in Demario Davis. One position the Jets have not addressed yet, though, is wide receiver. Currently, Garrett Wilson is expected to shoulder much of the load at pass catcher while being complemented by Adonai Mitchell. The team is expected to add another wideout early in the draft, but the depth is lacking as well. Behind Wilson, a potential draft pick, and Mitchell, the Jets’ next best player at this position is return specialist Isaiah Williams. Therefore, Darren Mougey and Co. must add more than one player at wide receiver in 2026. The most recent rumor regarding this course of action has come out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The Packers are seemingly shopping Dontayvion Wicks, and the Jets are seemingly calling.

Teams have been calling the #Packers about WR Dontayvion Wicks again. Some teams include the Bills, Raiders, Dolphins and Jets. Several others are calling, but these 4 have been the most prominent. pic.twitter.com/BXCDn7KpLP

Why Dontayvion Wicks is Available

The Packers have a lot of weapons that they see potential in. Firstly, Jayden Reed is a yards-after-catch specialist who will be close to a year removed from a collarbone injury in Week 1. Secondly, Christian Watson, despite his injury issues, is a highly talented deep and redzone threat. He thrived once back from injury last season. Finally, the team drafted Matthew Golden with the 20th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Packers hadn’t taken a receiver this high since Javon Walker in 2002. They have big plans for him as well. On top of these receivers, the Packers also have talented players at running back and tight end in Josh Jacobs and Tucker Kraft. Therefore, putting this all together, Dontayvion Wicks is very much expendable.

Dontayvion Wicks: The Pros and Cons

Based on the report from Easton Butler, it seems that many teams are pursuing Wicks. This makes sense as he is a talented player. As a career-depth option, Wicks has put up 1,391 yards and 12 touchdowns on 112 catches in his three years with the Packers. His best characteristic as a player is his route running. According to ESPN Analytics, Wicks had an “Open” score of 60 in 2025, which was T-37th out of 110 eligible wide receivers. This was above prominent players like Tee Higgins, Devonta Smith, Michael Pittman Jr., and D.J. Moore. One of the highest-rated players in this metric? Garrett Wilson. It’s worth mentioning, though, that this is actually a drop from 2024, as he recorded a score of 84, which was 4th out of 116 eligible players.

Wicks’ biggest issue throughout his young career has been drops. He has 14 of them in just three seasons, with 9 of them coming in 2024. He only had 3 in 2025, but that could be attributed to targets dropping by almost 50% from 80 to 44. Drops haven’t scared Darren Mougey from pursuing wide receivers, though, as Adonai Mitchell also struggled with drops before coming to New York (6 in 2024 with the Colts). It’s clear the team views this as a very fixable issue.

Dontayvion Wicks’ Fit With the Jets

As mentioned earlier, Wicks has been nothing more than a depth option so far in his NFL career. That wouldn’t be expected to change if he is moved to the Jets. The Jets already have their WR1 in Garrett Wilson, a player who should account for 100+ catches. As mentioned earlier, the Jets are probably going to draft a wide receiver with one of their four picks within the Top 45. This would immediately slot Wicks in as the WR4, with the potential to battle it out with Adonai Mitchell in camp for WR3 duties. Wicks has vast experience lining up in both the slot and the outside, similar to Garrett Wilson. Meanwhile, Adonai Mitchell is primarily an outside player. If Wicks were to end up on the Jets, he would most likely sub in for Wilson when he needs a series off. His skill set as a route runner makes this scenario work as well.

Overall, this has the potential to be a worthwhile move should the Jets pursue it. The price shouldn’t be anything higher than a 5th round pick, and even that seems unlikely. Wicks would immediately raise the floor of the room, which is desperately needed.
