How Adam Wharton’s stats compare to Enzo Fernandez as Chelsea eye midfield replacement

Enzo Fernandez’s future at Chelsea is uncertain right now, and reports have linked the Blues with a summer move to sign Adam Wharton. Let’s see how the two compare this season.

Chelsea have been in contact with Wharton’s representatives over a possible move, as the Argentine refuses to commit his future to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are demanding £100m to part ways with Fernandez, however will still need to get the replacement spot on if they do see him exit the club this summer.

Comparing Enzo Fernandez and Adam Wharton’s stats

Let’s take a look at how Fernandez and Wharton compare this season, with both being regulars in the Premier League and in Europe.

One thing that has to be made clear is that the two players feature in different positions. Fernandez plays in a far more attacking role than Wharton, and is therefore going to have better numbers.

The Chelsea man has eight Premier League goals this season, while Wharton is yet to score. However, the Crystal Palace star has five assists in comparison to Fernandez’s three.

Wharton has also created one more big chance than the Argentine this season with 11, and the pair are also matched well when it comes to duels.

Fernandez has won 121 duels this season in comparison to Wharton’s 119. However, the Englishman wins a higher percentage of his battles.

Defensive contributions are where the Crystal Palace man starts to excel in this comparison. He has made 60 tackles and 23 interceptions, in comparison to Fernandez’s 48 and 17.

Wharton has also recovered the ball more than the Chelsea star, including in the final third, where he would typically crop up more than the 22-year-old.

Discipline has been a glaring issue at Stamford Bridge this season, and Wharton has four yellow cards this season in comparison to Fernandez’s eight.

There is pressure on the Blues to get the replacement of Fernandez right if he was to leave, and Wharton would be picking up a different role in the starting side.

Chelsea would likely need to invest in a more attack-minded option too, with the Crystal Palace star perhaps being seen as an option to replace Romeo Lavia.

After joining the Blues nearly three years ago, the Belgian is still yet to complete a 90 minute appearance, and injuries are still plaguing him this season.
