The Pittsburgh Steelers are, once again, stuck in the purgatory that is waiting for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision. It is a similar situation that the Green Bay Packers faced during his final years with them, and the one the New York Jets found themselves in after.
Green Bay, at least, had a contingency plan in Jordan Love. In fact, the Packers ended up ready to move on from Rodgers before he was ready to move on from them. New York, too, decided to part ways with Rodgers before he officially made his decision on playing. They, however, did not have an adequate replacement in place.
Now, the Steelers are waiting, along with new head coach Mike McCarthy, for Rodgers to decide if he wants to play another year in the NFL. And if he does, he will sign with them as they are the only team that can offer him their starting job.
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy reveals how often he talks with Aaron Rodgers

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) fires the ball downfield during the second half of the NFL Wild Card game against the Houston Texans at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA on January 12, 2026.
McCarthy, of course, has a previous relationship with Rodgers thanks to their days together in Green Bay. Despite the fact that the future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback has not made a decision for 2026 yet, the Steelers coach is in frequent contact with him.
“McCarthy said on Monday that he has been in regular communication with Aaron Rodgers throughout the offseason. It’s still not clear whether Rodgers, a free agent, will sign with the Steelers, but McCarthy described his conversations with Rodgers as productive.
“’Just like they always are, life, football, so what’s going on at the facility,’ McCarthy said, via Steelers.com. ‘Really engaged into what’s going on. I would just say he’s in a very positive space. We’ll just continue to engage in conversations. We’ve been talking weekly, every couple of days, so we’ll just continue to do that.’”
As Michael David Smith noted above, McCarthy talks to Rodgers multiple times a week, and not just about football. That being said, it sounds like the four-time MVP quarterback is informed on what the Steelers are doing this off-season.
