New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel gave a variety of updates on corner Christian Gonzalez. The coach spoke with the media on Tuesday morning.
Gonzalez and his contract have been one of the hot-button issues of the offseason. This has been a talking point for both the Patriots and the media. These talks only increased when the Los Angeles Rams gave Trent McDuffie a four-year, $124 million contract. Now, Gonzalez is in line for an extension of his own.
In the meantime, it appears as though the Patriots have extended his $18.1 million option for the 2027 season. The coach had answers to both questions, as reported by Sleeper’s Carlos Lopez.
“Yes. If we haven’t picked it up, we should pick it up.” “We wanna make sure that we draft extremely well and then we identify the guys we wanna keep… Gonzo’s certainly one of those players.”
Gonzalez Has Been Cornerstone For Patriots
Gonzalez is coming off a tremendous season in 2025. He recorded 54 tackles and 10 pass deflections on the year. After not making the Pro Bowl in 2024, he was able to do so in 2025. These accolades just add to a stellar resume for the corner.
Gonzalez entered the league in 2023. He was the AFC rookie of the month for September 2023. He was also named a second-team all-Pro by the Associated Press in 2024. That same year, he was given an All-Pro nomination. He received a Pro Bowl nomination in 2025, the first one of his career.
The Patriots, as an organization, have historically had success in developing the corner position. They have also managed to land some strong corner targets over the years. Ty Law is perhaps one of the bigger names on the list. Law ended up being a Pro Football Hall of Famer and was an integral part of three Super Bowls.
More recently, Stephon Gilmore was able to help the Patriots lock down the cornerback position. He was the NFL defensive player of the year in 2019, a two-time first-team all-Pro, and a key piece in Super Bowl LII I. The playmaker recorded a crucial interception in the fourth quarter to down the Los Angeles Rams.
Latest Updates Positive Signs for Patriots
This latest report indicates that the Patriots are seemingly working with Gonzalez on getting an extension done. At the very least, they secured him for 2027. New England would be wise to get a deal done. McDuffie’s contract set the market for corners in a major way, and it gave Gonzalez additional leverage to be able to get a bigger contract.
It sounds like a deal for Gonzalez is going to get done sooner rather than later. All sides seem to agree that they want to get something done. Gonzalez has been a key piece of the Patriots’ rebuild and was one of the only bright spots in the Super Bowl LX loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The corner has a bright future ahead, and the Patriots would be wise to keep one of their most promising players in the fold. It will be interesting to see what the price point is, as well as the length of the contract. Regardless, the organization should do whatever it can to make sure he stays a member of the Patriots.
