Jeremie Frimpong in fresh injury worry ahead of Liverpool return vs Man City

Jeremie Frimpong has handed a fresh injury worry for Liverpool ahead of the Reds' return to action against Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The right-back came off the bench at half-time of the Netherlands' friendly against Ecuador on Tuesday, having replaced Liverpool teammate Cody Gakpo. He lasted just 13 minutes before being brought back off though, with concerns now lingering over his fitness ahead of his return to Merseyside.

Frimpong has already had two injury lay-offs this season, having picked up a hamstring problem against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League in October before suffering another muscle strain against Qarabag in January.

It's not yet clear what the problem is for Frimpong, although he was seen making his way straight down the tunnel after being brought off by Netherlands boss Ronald Koeman.

The 25-year-old will now be seen as a doubt for Saturday's trip to City, while his involvement in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain - which takes place just four days later - will also be in question.

Arne Slot is already light of options at right-back, with Conor Bradley out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a serious knee injury picked up against Arsenal in January.

That may well lead to Dominik Szoboszlai - who was also in action on Tuesday for Hungary against Greece - having to fill in once again at right-back, while Joe Gomez could also be used as an option.

Frimpong was one of four Liverpool players involved as the Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw by Ecuador. Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk both started but were replaced at half-time, while Ryan Gravenberch was given a rest as he remained on the bench.

Liverpool.com says: It's just Liverpool's luck this season. The final day of the international break, and just as the Reds looked to be getting out of it with no new injury concerns, this happens.

If Frimpong is absent for any length of time, that is really going to disrupt things for Slot at such a busy time in the season.

Fingers crossed it was just precautionary, but seeing Frimpong head straight down the tunnel is not too promising. Liverpool needs as many players fit and available at the moment.
