Charles insists contract talk is 'background noise' as full focus is on Arsenal

The St Mary's side host the Premier League champions-elect on Saturday, April 4, with Charles likely to start with midfielder Flynn Downes suspended.

Northern Ireland international Charles, who played the first half of a 1-1 draw with Wales on Tuesday evening, has drawn admirers from the top flight.

The 22 year old is out of contract at Saints in 2027, though technical director Johannes Spors is relaxed on his future with a clause for an extra year.

"It's background noise for me, really," he said. "I've got my contract here, and at the moment, I'm really just pushing to get promoted this season.

"I'm quite a laid-back guy. I don't really think too much about stuff."

Head coach Tonda Eckert will need to rely on Charles against the Gunners this week, after Downes picked up his second yellow in the fifth round.

Charles played 30 minutes in the Premier League as a teen for Man City before he moved to Saints for £12million in 2023, and was tipped for the top.

He was left out of the squad for the trip to Fulham to rest, so he is set for his first test against top level opposition for more than two years.

Charles said: "It's a game to really look forward to. When you are watching the draw, you always want to get a game against a big team.

"We want to go and prove ourselves against that level of competition. I don't think there is a better team than them in this country or Europe."

Charles credited Downes, as well as defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, for their influence on the side this season - and durinf the 2023/24 campaign.

"Even a couple of years ago, they were the kind of players who were always playing. They were always fit and ready to go," explained Charles.

"They were making sure the other boys were ready. I think that's just been the same this year, especially in recent games, when it's tough.

"It's about who you look to, and those two have been incredible for us. People won't want to play against us if it comes to a play-off game."
