Thomas Tuchel gives his honest verdict on Chelsea star Cole Palmer's England display against Japan

Thomas Tuchel has delivered a blunt indirect assessment of Cole Palmer’s performance for England against Japn, suggesting the Chelsea forward failed to meet the tactical demands required level.

It was only a few days ago that pundits like Ian Wright were praising Cole Palmer for his display against Uruguay at Wembley. Cole Palmer was handed an opportunity to start in his preferred number ten role, but he failed to provide the creative spark Thomas Tuchel demanded.

His catastrophic lapse in the 23rd minute, where he was easily dispossessed by Kaoru Mitoma on the halfway line, directly leading to Japan’s winning goal, summed up the display. Throughout his 65 minutes, he appeared physically drained and tactically lost against Japan’s disciplined 5-4-1 structure.

This display at Wembley feels particularly damaging given the timing. With the World Cup squad announcement looming in June, Palmer effectively squandered his final audition to displace Phil Foden or Morgan Rogers as the primary playmaker.

Thomas Tuchel responds when asked about Cole Palmer

Speaking after the defeat to Japan, Thomas Tuchel indirectly shared his displeasure with the performances of Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, who both started (as per BeanymanSports).

He was asked, ‘How how do you feel Cole Palmer and Phil Foden did tonight? Do do you feel you got enough from them?’

Tuchel responded.

“I’m not the biggest friend now to talk about individual, but of course if we if we put offensive players with a uh on the pitch, we we demand offensive actions, we demand yeah uh creativity, we demand dribblings, we demand shots,we demand assists, and we we clearly didn’t have enough, could not create.

“We made it difficult for us to find them in the in the half spaces. We we struggled to open up these spaces. We played against the deep 541.

“Um, we didn’t use the width of the field enough to make the difference. And our offensive players struggled to make the difference and and to create something against the in one-on-one situations because against the deep 541, you get basically no superiority through passing.

“You get it if you win one-on- ons. Otherwise, youwill be always in in in equal numbers or in in minority. And this is what happened in the first half.”

Cole Palmer’s best position?

The debate over Cole Palmer’s best position has intensified after his disappointing performance against Japan. Despite Tuchel stating that his best position is at number 10.

He has predominantly featured on the right wing this season to accommodate Enzo Fernandez in a more advanced role. But pundits like John Obi Mikel have already stated that Palmer is being wasted out wide, pointing towards a move to a central position.

Statistically, Palmer’s most prolific period remains his 2023–24 breakout, where he flourished in a fluid central attacking midfield role. This freedom allowed him to record 33 goal involvements in a single Premier League campaign.
