Chelsea hold serious talks to sign 18-year-old wonderkid from Bundesliga club: Reports

Chelsea have held concrete talks with Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen over a move for teenage defender Karim Coulibaly this summer, as per reports. The Blues are in the market for defensive reinforcement ahead of the 2026-27 season, having decided against filling the position in January.

A report from TEAMTalk (via Tribal Football) has revealed that Liam Rosenior's side have identified Coulibaly as their latest target for their summer recruitment. The Blues would have to part ways with a fee that will be a club-record for Werder Bremen if they are to land the 18-year-old.

Karim Coulibaly has impressed in his first season of professional football, appearing 22 times for Werder Bremen in Bundesliga. The youngster has started 20 times, playing 1,762 minutes, the equivalent of 72.5% of the entire league season in Germany so far.

Coulibaly's displays have earned him a debut with the Germany U-21 national team and recognition from multiple clubs across Europe. The highly-rated defender is also being tracked by Real Madrid, Olympique Marseille, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United ahead of a possible transfer.

Chelsea's defence has struggled this season, forcing the club to look to make a signing in the January transfer window. They came close to signing Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes before ultimately losing out to Liverpool in the race for the teenager.

The Blues are prepared to maintain their policy of signing young players with their interest in Coulibaly. They currently have youngsters Mamadou Sarr and Josh Acheampong in the same position, and appear set to avoid signing experienced players.
