The Cleveland Browns’ new state-of-the-art dome stadium has seen costs soar to $2.6 billion after the project announced “design enhancements.”

The Browns are building their new stadium in Brook Park, 16 miles from their Huntington Bank Field home, and are set to open the facility in 2029, boosting their chances of hosting a Super Bowl in the future. The project was initially set to cost $2.4 billion and house 67,500 fans, who will be seated closer to the action than the rest of the NFL.

The stadium has a striking design and a folded plate transparent roof, making the dome a unique piece of architecture. However, the ambitious project’s costs will soar from $2.4 billion to $2.6 billion after “design enhancements” were announced.

Architects HKS are in charge of the design, and the Cleveland Plain Dealer claims these enhancements include advanced roof technology used in the stadium’s design. The report states that the price increase is not due to inflation and that the public will not cover the additional costs for the enhancements.

The project will receive a $600 million boost from the state of Ohio, while the Browns' owners, Haslam Sports Group, are set to provide more than $1.7 billion in private funding. The Haslam family’s share accounts for roughly 67.5 percent of the total cost.

The Haslam family issued a statement last week reaffirming their commitment to seeing the development through. “We are committed to Northeast Ohio and believe with this increased investment, we will create not only a transformative world-class stadium and development but an opportunity to positively impact further growth in our region,” they said.

“We believe that Cleveland and all of Northeast Ohio deserve this state-of-the-art, first-of-its-kind venue, and we will continue to work on our commitment to build a stadium and football team that our fans and community will be proud of.”

HKS also expanded on their vision and goals for the new Brook Park stadium, which will be “tailored” to the “Browns’ loyal fan base.”

“Being built from the ground up, the project embodies the identity of the franchise while addressing the realities of Cleveland’s climate,” HSK said.

“From the seating and the sightlines to the roof structure and the stadium’s thoughtful integration with the surrounding district, every design detail is tailored to the Browns’ loyal fan base and their city.

“Every dimension of Huntington Bank Field is designed to create a competitive edge and extraordinary fan experience.

The project was initially expected to cost roughly $2.4bn

“The stadium will extend 80 feet below ground level, creating a unique, immersive environment. Seating rows are positioned lower and closer to the action than in any other NFL stadium, from the first row to the last.”

NFL rivals are also planning new stadiums set to open in the next few years.
