Barcelona have to start negotiations from scratch to retain Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford after this season.

The England international didn’t have a future at Old Trafford since the start of 2025. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa.

Last summer, Manchester United allowed the forward to join Barcelona on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

The purchase clause is €30m and Barca sporting director Deco has already confirmed in February about the option to make his stay permanent.

At that time, he said: “No, it’s a loan, and we have an option to buy.”

However, the La Liga side’s official didn’t mention the time frame or a deadline to activate to this clause.

Fresh twist in Manchester United man’s future

Cadena Ser‘s Què T’hi Jugues shares the latest on Barcelona’s stance on Marcus Rashford and the purchase clause.

The Catalan club had until March 31st to inform Manchester United that they want to exercise the €30m purchase clause. However, the deadline has passed, and they didn’t tell the Red Devils of their desire to buy him until yesterday.

The fresh twist opens up a new scenario. Hansi Flick’s side will now have to open fresh negotiations with the English club if they wish to extend the 27-year-old’s stay.

The Premier League side could set a new price, while the Spanish giants don’t intend to get into an auction.

The latter’s plan is to extend his loan for one more season while Michael Carrick’s side aren’t in favour of this. Therefore, Rashford stay at Barcelona beyond this season looks ‘very complicated’.

He hasn’t scored or assisted since January and his performances until the end of the season may be crucial for his future.

Què T’hi Jugues end their report by stating: ‘Today, the feeling that emerges is that the options for Rashford’s continuity are closer to no than yes. With more doubts than certainties and with one determining factor: the economy. In an optimistic context in this sense, Rashford would not be the priority for now.’

Rashford could return to Manchester United

As of now, this claim hasn’t been backed up by another Spanish publication. If Marcus Rashford returns to Old Trafford, the Red Devils have to make a decision on his future.

The coming weeks should provide more clarity on his long-term stay at Barcelona. If not, he may have to find another club if Manchester United don’t include him in their plans.
