**Liverpool have suffered a fresh injury concern ahead of their trip to Manchester City this weekend, with Jeremie Frimpong picking up an injury.**
The Reds head to the Etihad on Saturday lunchtime, looking to spring a surprise and make a strong return from the international break.
Liverpool fans always have to hold their breath when players head off to represent their respective countries, hoping they avoid injury.
Unfortunately, it looks as though Frimpong has been struck down with his latest fitness issue, with Netherlands manager [Ronald Koeman](https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2039230530613338581?s=20) confirming the news on Tuesday night after the right-back played just 13 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Ecuador:
_“That was a real setback – we had to take him off.”_
**A cruel first season at Liverpool for Jeremie Frimpong**
----------------------------------------------------------
Having generally been such an injury-free player during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, things have changed for the worse for Frimpong this season.
This is now the Dutchman’s fourth injury of the campaign, which arguably points towards questionable training methods or simply bad luck.
Not having Frimpong for the City match would be a big setback, especially with Conor Bradley out for the rest of the season, with [Arne Slot](https://www.thisisanfield.com/2025/12/slot-frimpong-liverpool-low-block-tactics/) hailing him in the past, saying:
_“If he’s fit, he can definitely helps us, because last week he had the assist against Tottenham and today he had a great assist against Wolves. Pace, that’s what he has, and that’s so important and crucial in modern football. To create something against a low block, teams that defend with so many players, usually teams break this down with set-pieces – that’s not our biggest strength.”_
Hopefully, Frimpong’s injury is nothing serious, and his absence is only short-term, but for now, it looks as though Liverpool will again have to use a player in an auxiliary role at right-back on Saturday.
It feels more likely that Joe Gomez will start there over Dominik Szoboszlai, considering it will be a game where the Reds need to be resolute defensively.
That would also allow Dominik Szoboszlai to play in his preferred midfield role, with Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike making up the attack, and Cody Gakpo left on the substitutes’ bench.
