Report:£52m Premier League star likely to push for move amid Chelsea interest

Chelsea are one club who could benefit from Wolverhampton Wanderers being relegated this season as they target Joao Gomes.

The midfielder has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the past. In 2024, it was reported that Chelsea were considering Gomes.

They never made a move for him, but it looks as though the club could finally land the 25-year-old this summer.

Joao Gomes expected to push for move amid interest from Chelsea

Chelsea are likely to be in the market for a new midfielder in the upcoming transfer window, and Gomes appears to be one name on their list.

With Wolves set to be relegated to the Championship, the Brazilian should be available as well.

According to CaughtOffside, Gomes is expected to push for a move as Wolves get ready for life in the second division.

Sources close to Wolves have played down the idea of Gomes’ €60m (£52m) price tag dropping after the Midlands outfit’s imminent relegation, but clubs still feel that there is a bargain deal to be done, the same outlet claims.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United and Napoli are sides who are interested in the Brazil international, according to CaughtOffside’s report.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is another midfielder being linked to Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window.

How Joao Gomes and compatriot Andrey Santos compare

Gomes and Andrey Santos could both be teammates at this year’s World Cup with Brazil and then at Chelsea.

In terms of profile, they are similar midfielders, with the two Brazil internationals being capable of winning the ball back. It is an area where Gomes has really thrived in this season.

Given that Chelsea have Santos, Moises Caicedo and Dario Essugo, Liam Rosenior perhaps needs a different type of midfielder to Gomes, especially if Enzo Fernandez leaves Stamford Bridge this summer.

Ultimately, Gomes could be a great deal for the Blues, but he does not have to be a priority for them.
