Patriots' QB plans revealed after cutting 9-year veteran

The New England Patriots have their franchise quarterback, Drake Maye.

There's more to a QB depth chart than just one guy, though, and on that front, the Pats have some work to do.

Earlier this offseason, the Patriots cut Josh Dobbs, ending the nine-year veteran's tenure in New England.

They also made the move to sign Tommy DeVito to a two-year contract to remain with the Patriots.

At minimum, that appears to promote DeVito to the QB2 spot on the depth chart after he was in the third spot last season.

It also creates a potential need, though, and the Patriots plan to fill it.

"Maye enters his third NFL season, and now the team is planning to add a rookie No. 3 option behind him and Tommy DeVito, who signed a two-year, $7.4 million contract earlier this month," ESPN's Mike Reiss wrote in a new article on Tuesday.

That adds some intrigue to the latter stages of the 2026 NFL Draft for Patriots fans.

Some picks are more exciting than others, and even while already having Maye in place, there's always something fascinating about picking a QB in the draft.

New England could always sign an undrafted free agent quarterback instead, but if there's someone on the board they like in the fifth, sixth or seventh round, don't be surprised if the Patriots snag him.

It'd be a cool spot for a young QB to arrive in, getting a chance to learn from Maye and potentially carve out an NFL career.
