Report: Chelsea open surprise talks for£70m striker Luis Enrique described as a'soldier'

Chelsea have opened talks with Goncalo Ramos’ representatives ahead of a surprise move to sign the Paris Saint-Germain striker, but they face plenty of competition for his signature.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake are expected to spend big once again this summer, with Chelsea clearly in need of a new goalkeeper and a centre-back or two. They may have to replace Enzo Fernandez, too.

Then, up front, Scott Minto has ordered Chelsea to sign a “world-class” striker despite the impressive and improved form of Joao Pedro. Now, it looks like those calls are being answered as Chelsea start to move.

Marc Cucurella discussing his future

According to a report from TeamTalk, Chelsea have opened talks with Portugal international Ramos, who has finally decided to leave the French champions after three years as a back-up, after his £70m move.

Chelsea face huge competition for PSG striker Goncalo Ramos

Playing 124 times for PSG, Ramos has scored 44 goals and laid on 10 assists, while also boasting 10 goals in 24 Portugal caps. But he’s hardly ever been given a run as first choice, starting only 51 of those 124.

Now, TeamTalk say Ramos is finally convinced he should leave PSG with Chelsea and Newcastle both said to have opened talks for the PSG star. He has a contract with the Ligue 1 giants until the summer of 2028.

But the Premier League sides are not the only clubs interested. Indeed, AC Milan want to lure him to Italy, Diego Simeone is keen on a move for Ramos at Atletico, and both Dortmund and Leipzig are also linked.

However, the report also indicates that Ramos would like a move to the Premier League and to test himself on these shores, giving both Chelsea and Newcastle the upper hand in a move for the PSG ace.

Despite his lack of starts, Luis Enrique is a big fan. The PSG manager not only admires Ramos as a player, but also his attitude, saying this in January: “A soldier, an incredible player, an incredible person.

“He doesn’t have many minutes, but he’s always present. When I told him to come on for two or three minutes, he did. He’s an extraordinary player, it’s a pleasure to have Gonçalo with us.”

What Ramos said about Chelsea before Club World Cup final

Ramos was part of the PSG side that were hammered by Chelsea in the Club World Cup final just under a year ago, at MetLife Stadium. In keeping with his PSG stint, Ramos was a 77th-minute substitute.

Before the game, Ramos was complimentary of Chelsea, unlike some of his PSG teammates. The striker said: “They are a very good team. They are a very good team, but they will not change anything about us.”

Now, Ramos could end up switching sides. It is certainly not the first time a player has made the switch between PSG and Chelsea, with Thiago Silva joining the Blues from the French giants in 2022.

Indeed, Ramos is not even the only PSG player supposedly on Chelsea’s radar. Versatile midfielder Senny Mayulu is also a target for Boehly and the Blues, though PSG are keen to keep the teenage talent.
