Report: Real Madrid sent scout to watch Chelsea's 'number one' midfield target

Chelsea could be forced to sign a new midfielder in the summer, with Enzo Fernandez’s future in serious doubt right now.

Fernandez continues to be linked to Real Madrid as they look to bring in a midfielder themselves.

Chelsea are rumoured to have their primary target for the midfield position, but as well as Fernandez, it appears that Real Madrid are also interested in him.

Real Madrid recently scouted Adam Wharton

According to journalist Simon Phillips, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is Chelsea’s “number one” midfield target going into the summer transfer window.

However, they could face competition for his signature from Real Madrid if they do not sell Fernandez to the Spanish giants.

A report from the Daily Mail claims that Real Madrid view Wharton as a viable alternative to Fernandez and Rodri and have scouted him in the past fortnight.

Chelsea also seem to have other midfielders on their shortlist, including AS Monaco’s Lamine Camara.

It was recently reported that Chelsea are considering Camara, though Wharton looks to be the man they really want.

Neither player will come cheap. The Blues could be looking at around £60m to sign either player this summer.

Adam Wharton to Chelsea still seems more likely

With Wharton clearly not being a priority for Real Madrid, there is a good chance that he ends up at Stamford Bridge instead of the Santiago Bernabeu.

For as good as the 22-year-old has been at Palace, he does not exactly fit the profile of a Galactico signing either.

Fernandez or Rodri are more likely signings for Real Madrid than Wharton, so Chelsea probably need to be more worried about interest from within England.

Wharton has also been heavily linked to the Blues’ Premier League rivals Manchester United. If they qualify for the Champions League and Chelsea fail to, which seems like a real possibility, that could give them the upper hand. So it is imperative that Liam Rosenior’s men finish in the top five this season.
