Geovany Quenda will transfer to Chelsea in the summer
Chelsea’s long-term plan for Geovany Quenda is now entering a decisive stage, with the winger back in Lisbon and immediately pushing for minutes with Sporting ahead of a Champions League clash against Arsenal.
The 18-year-old has not played since early December, when a fractured fifth metatarsal cut short his momentum during a strong run of form.
At that point, Quenda had already delivered 5 goals and 8 assists in 22 appearances, underlining why Chelsea moved early to secure him in a deal worth £43.5m (€50.7m).
Since then, Chelsea have taken full control of his recovery. Surgery, rehabilitation and even physical development were all handled at Cobham, with the club extending his stay to build muscle and prepare him for the demands of the Premier League.
That work now looks to have paid off.
Immediate return to action planned
As we covered last weekend, Geovany Quenda returned to Lisbon on Saturday. But according to Portuguese outletsA BOLA and Record, the youngster is already training normally with Sporting.
There are no physical restrictions, and that is the key detail.
After completing his recovery programme in London, including recent on-pitch work, the winger is expected to integrate straight into Rui Borges’ squad. The reports indicate he could even be included in the squad to face Santa Clara this week.
However, the bigger focus is clear. Quenda is expected to be involved against Arsenal in the Champions League on April 7, in what could be his first appearance in nearly four months.
Chelsea’s role in that is significant. The final weeks of his recovery were deliberately extended to ensure he returned not just fit, but physically stronger and ready for high-intensity matches.
Chelsea’s plan already shaping Quenda impact
Geovany Quenda arrives back at Sporting in a very different condition from the player who left in December.
Medical tests carried out at the end of his programme confirmed full recovery of mobility, even under maximum load. That removes the final doubt over his readiness.
Chelsea also used the final phase of his rehabilitation to increase his muscle mass and improve his physical profile. This aligns with their long-term vision of preparing him for English football.
That explains why his return was delayed earlier this month.
Rather than rushing him back, Chelsea chose to complete the process in London. The priority was clear – avoid setbacks and deliver a player ready to perform immediately.
Backed for Chelsea success
Geovany Quenda’s pathway to Stamford Bridge is also being backed by someone who knows his development closely.
Speaking to Portuguese outlet Rádio Renascença, Congolese coach Basaúla Lemba – who worked with Quenda in his youth academy days – expressed confidence in the winger’s chances in England.
“It will go well. He is a young player with a lot of ambition. He wants to finish this final part of the season at a high level so he can arrive well prepared to join Chelsea. And he will have chances to do it,” he said.
Basaúla also believes the youngster still has a chance of reaching the 2026 World Cup with Portugal.
“It would be the perfect scenario. He has already shown he can get there. It is not too late. The recent injury may have delayed him a bit compared to others. But nobody knows, football can change very quickly.”
That external backing reinforces Chelsea’s internal belief. The club have already invested heavily in Quenda, and everything in recent months suggests they are building towards a player ready to make an impact sooner rather than later.
Next steps for Geovany Quenda
Geovany Quenda now faces a short but intense final stretch with Sporting. He will look to reclaim his place on the right wing, where Geny Catamo stepped in during his absence. The competition is real, but Quenda’s output earlier this season suggests he will expect to play.
Internally, there is also motivation to finish strongly. He is targeting double figures for both goals and assists, while also aiming to leave Sporting with silverware.
From Chelsea’s perspective, the next few weeks are about rhythm and match fitness.
If Quenda can quickly reintegrate and contribute in key fixtures – especially against Arsenal – he will arrive in London this summer not as a project, but as a player ready to compete.
