“I always tell my wife Valu that if I have to choose a city to live in Europe, I really like Madrid. It’s very similar to Buenos Aires, also because of the food.”
These comments come just a few days after the Argentine player turned down Chelsea’s offer to sign him for a long time. When he got to international duty, and reporters asked him about Real Madrid links, Fernandez said there had been “zero talks” but that he would look at his situation again after the 2026 World Cup.
Rumours about Real Madrid should be taken seriously, especially since the player has spoken publicly about the Spanish capital. Reports in Spain have also claimed that Los Blancos are preparing an initial offer of about €120 million for a possible summer deal.
However, it is believed that Rodri remains Real Madrid’s top midfield target, with Fernandez and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as backup options. Also, Los Blancos may not have any real plans to go after the Argentine player right now because he costs so much.
Fernandez moved from Benfica to Chelsea in January 2023 for a British record fee of €121 million. He is still under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032. That long deal gives the Blues a lot of power in any talks about the Argentine’s future this summer.
