The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported Mike Tomlin is stepping down as the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach.

Even though Mike Tomlin is no longer the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t still have the respect of his former NFL coaching peers. After a historic 19-year run in the Steel City, which concluded this offseason, Tomlin is taking the year off from coaching. Seeing as that is the case, NFL head coaches and insiders alike celebrated Tomlin while at the league meetings in Phoenix this week.

Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer recently captured a video of NFL head coaches enjoying each other’s company by the pool of the hotel where league meetings were taking place. Furthermore, Glazer made it a point to shout out Tomlin in his post.

This is what Glazer wrote in his social media post as NFL head coaches spent time together under the Sun in Phoenix:

“One of my favorite days of the year!!! Our 18th annual NFL Head Coaches day-drinking day at the NFL Owners Meeting. I started this with Mike Tomlin 18 years ago (yes, we raised a glass to him) to get the head coach fraternity to bond together, bounce things off each other, ask each other for advice and to celebrate how cool life is TOGETHER…”

While in Pittsburgh for 19 seasons, Tomlin never posted a losing season. That 19-year streak is an NFL record. Additionally, he guided the franchise to 13 playoff appearances, eight division titles, three AFC Championship game appearances, multiple Super Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl title. He is tied with Chuck Noll in the top spot for all-time regular-season wins in franchise history (193).

The Steelers Move Forward With Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

GettyMike McCarthy led the Green Bay Packers to a win over Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

To replace Tomlin this offseason, the Steelers hired a Pittsburgh native and a Super Bowl-winning head coach. Mike McCarthy is now the man in charge after previously coaching the Green Bay Packers (2006-2018) and Dallas Cowboys (2020-2024).

McCarthy made waves in Green Bay as he successfully guided the team through a transition from Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre to future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. In between the time when Rodgers took over (2008) and when McCarthy was let go (2018), the Packers would make eight playoff appearances, win five division titles, earn three NFC Championship game trips, and take home a Super Bowl.

In Dallas, the Cowboys were one of the league’s best regular-season teams. McCarthy guided the franchise to three consecutive 12-win seasons (2021-2023). However, Dallas was unable to fully climb the mountain in the postseason.

Now in Pittsburgh, McCarthy has the chance to build another winner. Led by his old quarterback, who could be returning for a 22nd NFL season in Rodgers, the Steelers are ready to be a playoff team right away. The question is whether or not it can get back to and win the Super Bowl for the first time in over 15 years.
