Waldemar Anton has been a rock for Borussia Dortmund this season, clocking 37 appearances to date.
He’s also in the picture for Germany ahead of the World Cup. He didn’t feature in their recent friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana but coach Julian Nagelsmann has strongly hinted he will be in his World Cup squad. That level of trust speaks volumes.
Inside Dortmund, Anton is valued as a vocal leader, a player who sets standards in the dressing room and bring structure to the back line. Those qualities have not gone unnoticed.
A report yesterday stated Manchester United were interested and BILD now back that up. They confirm that there is interest from both Spain and England, adding real weight to what initially looked like an unusual move from United.
Atlético’s long-standing admiration
The interest from Spain comes from Atlético Madrid. They pushed to sign him from VfB Stuttgart in the past and their admiration had never faded. In fact his evolution at Dortmund has only strengthened their stance.
Now Manchester United are in the picture. This report from BILD is a second separate one on their interest too, suggesting there’s something to it.
But their potential involvement makes little sense. At 29-years-old, Waldemar Anton doesn’t fit the long-term profile they’ve been targeting in recent windows. They are also well stocked at centre-back, particularly with Harry Maguire expected to sign a new deal.
Waldemar Anton does, though, offer immediate leadership and reliability at the back. That may be something those in charge at Old Trafford value.
For now, though, this feels like an agent pushing his client ahead of a busy summer rebuild at Borussia Dortmund and nothing more.
