Alisson injury mystery as Arne Slot confirms goalkeeper out vs. Man City

Alisson has been ruled out of Liverpool’s FA Cup quarter-final at Man City with Arne Slot explaining that his recovery from a mystery injury will be “a bit longer.”

Having missed the 2-1 loss to Brighton and Brazil’s friendlies against France and Croatia, Alisson has now been ruled out for Liverpool’s return.

That comes with a lack of clarity over the goalkeeper’s latest injury, with little known regarding the area or the extent of the issue.

Liverpool’s No. 1 has already missed 11 games this season through four separate issues and it is a growing concern for a player who has sat out of large periods of recent campaigns.

In an update on his squad on Wednesday, Slot told the club’s official website: “Alisson will be out for a bit longer.”

The head coach is expected to be pushed further on the specifics of Alisson‘s injury when he holds his pre-match press conference at the AXA Training Centre at 11am on Friday.

But the situation will be a growing frustration for supporters, and though Liverpool have already extended the 33-year-old’s contract by a further year to 2027, it could soon be seen as time to move on.

Shortly after his injury was confirmed last month, Alisson wrote on his Instagram story: “Unfortunately, I’ll be out of action for a while.

“Already working hard to be back stronger! Thank you for the support.”

Giorgi Mamardashvili to start for Liverpool vs. Man City

Giorgi Mamardashvili will start in his place in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final away to Man City and the chances are he will be required against Paris Saint-Germain four days later.

Those games will serve as the biggest test so far for a goalkeeper who is slated to take over as Liverpool’s long-term No. 1 in the future.

Mamardashvili has played 13 times since his £29 million move from Valencia last summer, conceding 20 goals and keeping only three clean sheets.

Liverpool are expected to welcome Alexander Isak back to the squad for the trip to Man City, while Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa should also be passed fit.

Slot knows he will be without Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni along with Stefan Bajcetic and Jayden Danns, while there are now doubts over Jeremie Frimpong.

“Jeremie, the national team doctor of the Netherlands tells us that it was precautionary that they took him out,” the head coach said on Wednesday.

“But he will have a scan later today to see.”
