Report: Chelsea offered bargain £21m deal for defender they almost signed spent £52m on in 2023

Todd Boehly and Clearlake are expected to make more signings this summer as Chelsea continue to be linked with plenty of players, and the latest is Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

Just one game shy of clocking up 200 appearances for Inter Milan, 29-year-old Dumfries could well end his five-year stint with the Nerazzurri this summer. That is despite having a contract at Inter until 2028.

A 71-time Netherlands star, Dumfries is recognised as one of the world’s best right-backs and has been for some time. But it is believed the defender wants to try something new, and he could move to England.

According to the latest reports from TeamTalk, the former PSV Eindhoven star has been offered to a few English clubs ahead of the summer window. Chelsea are among them, but Liverpool are leading the way.

Chelsea can sign Denzel Dumfries for a bargain fee

While two years are left on his Inter contract, TeamTalk say there is a release clause in his Inter deal, and it means clubs can land the right-back for just £21m this summer. A bargain for a player of his quality.

Chelsea are expected to change their approach in the transfer market this summer and consider signing more experienced players. It means he could be a possible signing for Chelsea in the next few months.

But Chelsea are not the only club to be offered Dumfries. Indeed, Liverpool, Newcastle and Tottenham have also been spoken to regarding Dumfries, as have both Manchester clubs going into the summer.

Chelsea almost signed Denzel Dumfries back in 2023

It is quite incredible that Dumfries has never made the move to England to play in the Premier League, given the Dutchman has constantly been linked with the best clubs in English football over the years.

FINAL: Who do YOU think should be Chelsea manager next season?

The likes of Man United, Liverpool and Chelsea have been regularly suggested as a suitor for the Inter Milan defender. In 2023, it is claimed that Dumfries actually came close to a £52m move to Chelsea.

Three years on, and for a lot less money, it appears Dumfries could join Chelsea. But right-back is unlikely to be a priority for the Blues this summer, with Reece James and Malo Gusto the current options.

James is easily Chelsea’s most important player. Although injury-prone, Dumfries may struggle to start if James is fit. Malo Gusto is a very adequate back-up, while Josh Acheampong can play as a right-back.
