Attempts to persuade the Chelsea star to switch allegiances

The Republic of Ireland national team is hoping to persuade Chelsea striker Liam Delap to represent them instead of England, and is relying on a former Manchester United defender to help make that happen.

Delap has represented England at every level, from under-15s to under-21s, but has not yet been selected for the senior squad.

The Irish national team is trying to persuade the 23-year-old to switch allegiance and play for them, just as his father Rory did.

John O’Shea, the Republic of Ireland assistant manager and former Manchester United defender, has been in contact with Delap senior regarding his son, according to the English newspaper The Sun.

O'Shea said: "As they say, it’s up to Liam. Let’s wait and see."

For his part, Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson commented: “It’s still his decision alone.”

He added: “He hasn’t played for England, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be involved in the World Cup; in fact, it seems a long way off… but ultimately, the decision is his.”

Delap had a difficult start to his career at Chelsea after his £30 million move from Ipswich, who were relegated to the second tier last summer.

The former Manchester City player suffered a hamstring injury at the start of the season and has scored just two goals in 32 appearances.
