The Las Vegas Raiders have found their backup quarterback for Fernando Mendoza.
According to his agent, Mike McCartney, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins is signing with the Raiders.
The length and financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.
"Congrats Kirk Cousins agreeing to a contract with the Raiders," McCartney wrote.
Why Raiders signed Kirk Cousins
There are several reasons why this move made sense for Las Vegas.
According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, the Raiders "wanted a veteran quarterback in their room" to help develop Mendoza.
We also know that head coach Klint Kubiak didn't make any promises about the future No. 1 overall pick starting right away, so Cousins gives the Raiders a potential starter if Mendoza isn't under center Week 1.
While Cousins' best days are very clearly behind him, he is absolutely perfect for what the Raiders need.
Say what you want about Cousins' diminished skills, but we'd still take him under center over Aidan O'Connell, who was initially slated to be Mendoza's backup.
Another great quality Cousins has is he can be a mentor with his wealth of NFL experience as Mendoza navigates his first season in the NFL.
