Anonymous NFL Executive 'Not High On' Patriots' Big Free Agency Signing

The 2026 NFL Draft begins in three weeks.

With much of the league's free agency activity having wrapped up, NFL executives discussed every AFC team's offseason up to this point for an article posted by The Athletic on Thursday.

The feedback on the New England Patriots' moves was mixed, especially when it came to the four-year, $68 million contract given to wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

"Doubs was my top-rated receiver out there," one executive said, according to The Athletic report. "He’s a little inconsistent and can handle only so much, so you should play him at only one spot. But I think he’s really talented."

Another responder wasn't as impressed with the Patriots' big signing and said there's little to no improvement at the position with the loss of Stefon Diggs.

They also said they still expect New England to eventually trade for Philadelphia Eagles wideout A.J. Brown.

"I was not high on Doubs," the second executive said, citing the receiver’s "inconsistent concentration," per The Athletic. "They did not improve on the field from (Stefon) Diggs. Maybe they did off the field from a headache standpoint. It seems just a matter of waiting until June 1 passes for Philly to trade A.J. Brown, who in my opinion is a declining player each of the last three seasons."

Doubs led the Green Bay Packers in targets (85), receptions (55) and receiving yards (career-high 724), while also tying for the team lead in receiving touchdowns (six) during the 2025 season.
