Chiefs sign former Bills 1st-round pick as free agent from Cowboys

The Kansas City Chiefs have totally re-made their cornerback room this offseason.

Part of the makeover took place Thursday, when the Chiefs signed Kaiir Elam.

The deal was reported by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, and it's a chance for Elam to try and revitalize his career.

Elam was originally a first-round pick by the Buffalo Bills, the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Florida.

He was supposed to be a star on the perimeter for Buffalo, but almost immediately, he was overtaken by late-round pick Christian Benford in the Bills' pecking order.

Elam never really could regain a full spot back, and when he played, he didn't grade out favorably in any of the metrics.

Elam did intercept two passes as a rookie with the Bills, but he didn't snatch another in his next two seasons.

Before the 2025 season, the Bills sent Elam to the Dallas Cowboys. He played 10 games in Dallas, including seven starts, and made 29 tackles with just a single pass defensed.

Elam concluded the 2025 campaign with the Tennessee Titans for four games.

The 6-foot-1 Elam will turn 25 on May 5, so he's still on the young side for a guy who has already played four NFL seasons.

The Chiefs certainly need the addition of cornerback depth, and Steve Spagnuolo will try to unlock some of Elam's untapped potential.

Kansas City needs a bounce-back as a team in general, so maybe helping Elam reach a new level will also help the Chiefs quickly return to contention.
