Why it will be ‘really difficult’ for Man Utd to sign Myles Lewis-Skelly this summer

Manchester United face some hurdles if they are to persuade Arsenal to sell Myles Lewis-Skelly in the summer.

Plans are being made ahead of a busy summer transfer window at every club in the Premier League.

Manchester United are no different, navigating the market trying to buy and sell players, but it has already been briefed that the midfield will be revamped following Casemiro’s anticipated exit.

United are also looking to provide competition for Luke Shaw at left-back, which has led to Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly emerging as a United target.

Arsenal not expecting Myles Lewis-Skelly exit despite Man Utd links

Although Lewis-Skelly came through Arsenal’s academy as a midfielder, the 19-year-old has primarily played as a left-back in the first team under Mikel Arteta.

Opportunity of late have been limited for Lewis-Skelly, making just 14 Premier League appearances (one start) so far this season.

United need competition for Shaw next season because there are going to be more fixtures with European football back on the cards, so it’s not hard to see how Lewis-Skelly would get more opportunities at Old Trafford.

Appearing on The United Stand, Ben Jacobs has provided an update on Lewis-Skelly.

Jacobs claims United, like Lewis-Skelly, but a deal is difficult because Arsenal have other ideas.

In other words, United would have to pay over the odds for the English youngster.

“They have made an informal inquiry on the player’s side to understand that,” Jacobs said.

“I understand Manchester United like Myles Lewis-Skelly. Really difficult deal because Arsenal won’t necessarily play ball, but the player is prepared to explore options because he wants more minutes.

“We had a link in January with Chelsea and it was the same, the players’ side are prepared to speak with suitors, with full respect for Arsenal, but they almost want that leverage with options.

“When I speak to Arsenal sources they basically say the only way a sale will happen is for something absolutely crazy. So if a club want Myles Lewis-Skelly on the club-to-club side they will likely have to overpay.”

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s attitude hailed by Lee Carsley

United do background checks on players to ensure they have the right character to play for the biggest club in the Premier League.

A recent interview with England U21 manager Lee Carsley reveals that the England coach thinks highly of Lewis-Skelly.

Carsley hailed Lewis-Skelly’s ‘great attitude’ with the England U21s after playing in last Friday’s 1-1 draw in Andorra.

“He’s shown such a great attitude and it’s really benefited him this week playing minutes and training at a good level,” Carsley said.

“I think that’s one of the things that we always look for with the [senior] players and I’m thinking of Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento, Rico Lewis,” Lewis-Skelly said.

“A lot of players have done that, so Myles is not on his own.

“We look at attitude, we look at the desire to play and he was really enthusiastic about coming to the 21s. He sees that potentially as a route into getting minutes and then potentially going to play for Arsenal and then England.

“He had such a rise so quickly and this is football. This is what happens. There is lots of ups and downs, but he’s responded well to it this camp.”
