John Harbaugh and the New York Giants have a promising young running back in Cam Skattebo, but he's still recovering from injury.
The New York Giants have a new head coach in John Harbaugh, and he’s one of the most talked-about coaches on the scene during the NFL offseason. Now, the 2026 NFL draft is getting closer, and Harbaugh and company are being warned that they better choose wisely, and the reason is because of injured running back Cam Skattebo.
Back on October 26, 2025, during a competitive Sunday matchup, Skattebo experienced a bad injury during the Giants‘ game against the Philadelphia Eagles. During the game, Skattebo was injured by Eagles linebacker Zack Baun. The injury was a severe right ankle injury, according to CBS Sports, and it was so bad that the player had to be immediately taken off the field. The Philadelphia crowd gave Skattebo a standing ovation on his way out, which was classy. It was a gruesome injury and hard for the Giants to watch.
Before he was injured, looking at his 2025 season, Skattebo notched 101 carries for 410 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns, along with 24 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns, according to ESPN research. So, he was a total breakout star. But, some NFL analysts and experts are warning the Giants to beware of trusting the player fully for the 2026-27 just yet.
John Harbaugh and the New York Giants Told to Have Running Back Assurance
In a Wednesday, April 1 feature for Yahoo Sports, NFL analysts Nate Tice and Charles McDonald discuss the 2026 NFL draft and give their picks. “With the NFL spring meetings this week in Phoenix, team owners, coaches and general managers are meeting with media to offer updates on offseason news,” they state in the piece. “That includes answering questions about the 2026 NFL draft.”
In the piece, they urge the Giants to go for Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with their No. 5 pick.
“This pick might be a shocker, but there is a strand of logic to follow here: namely, John Harbaugh and Greg Roman getting back together in New York,” they state in the feature. “Matt Nagy will be calling plays, but Roman is with the Giants as a senior offensive assistant and Harbaugh has thoroughly demonstrated a desire to be a good running team through almost his entire Baltimore tenure.”
The New York Giants Need a ‘Game-Breaking Running Back’
They add that New York “may view a game-breaking running back as the last piece considering the offensive line isn’t in immediate need of an upgrade and they threw some bodies at wide receiver.”
Finally, and here’s the kicker, they say that “there’s no telling how Cam Skattebo will look when he gets back on a field after recovering from a leg injury, but Love is a vastly superior prospect who brings some speed to the Giants’ backfield.”
That’s a harsh reality. We hope Skattebo is immediately good to go when he’s back on the field with the Giants, but injuries change things. If he’s off to a slow start with the team, Love would be a key addition if the goal is to get the New York Giants off to a winning season.
