Real Madrid are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of Enzo Fernandez, with fresh claims suggesting the Chelsea midfielder is now a more realistic target than Rodri of Manchester City.
According to Spanish radio presenter Raul Varela, Fernandez is “much closer” to joining the La Liga giants, while a move for Rodri is effectively off the table. Varela stated that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez currently has “no interest” in signing the City midfielder, significantly shifting the club’s transfer priorities.
Madrid’s search for a new midfield leader has intensified ahead of the summer window, with long-term replacements needed following the gradual transition from the era of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. While Rodri had been viewed as an ideal deep-lying option, financial constraints and reluctance from Manchester City to sell appear to have cooled that interest.
Fernandez, meanwhile, has emerged as a more attainable — and perhaps more glamorous — option. The Argentine has impressed at CHELSEA and remains under contract until 2032, but recent comments have fuelled speculation about his future. He has openly admitted he would like to live in Madrid, describing the Spanish capital as a city that reminds him of Buenos Aires
Speaking on Radio Marca’s La Tribu, presenter Raul Varela claimed that Madrid would prioritise a move for Fernandez ahead of Rodri if they signed a new central midfielder this summer
‘Enzo is much closer to Real Madrid, Rodri has no chance of going to Real Madrid,’ Varela said.
‘Today, the president of Real Madrid doesn’t want to sign him. I hate transfer news because everything changes every fifteen minutes, but today the president of Real Madrid is not going to sign Rodri.’
Marca’s Amalio Moratalla added: ‘He’s a very high-level player who would surely fit in at Real Madrid, the question is what price CHELSEA would set and what effort Real Madrid would have to make.’
CUCURELLA EYES MOVE
Marc Cucurella has become the latest Chelsea player to fuel transfer speculation, admitting a potential return to FC Barcelona would be “hard to turn down” amid growing uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.
The Spain international, speaking during the international break, stopped short of actively pushing for a move but made it clear that a switch back to his boyhood club would be an attractive proposition. Having come through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, the left-back retains strong emotional ties to the Catalan side, where he spent formative years before building his senior career elsewhere.
Cucurella emphasised that any decision would depend not only on footballing factors but also on family considerations, suggesting that while a transfer is not imminent, the door remains open should Barcelona make a move.
His CHELSEA team-mate, Enzo Fernandez, had also fanned flames of a move to Real Madrid, telling an Argentinian outlet that he’d consider living in Madrid amid rumours.
While away with the Spain national team, speaking to press, Cucurella was asked a question referring to Fernandez’s revelation: “At the end of the day, Spain is always Spain – it’s my country and where I grew up, and you always think about going back, but I think I’d leave it for a few years.
“I’m very happy there (in England), my family too, and as a life experience, it’s a very good one. Well, it’s clear that if something like that happens, it’s difficult to turn them down, but I’d have to consider it.
“At the end of the day, it’s not just about me – I’d also have to think about my family, maybe, what’s best for them or for all of us, but as I said before, I’m not thinking about that right now.
“If it happens, it happens, and we’ll see what we decide.”
SIMEONE MESSAGE SENT
Former William Gallas has urged Chelsea to make a bold managerial move by appointing Diego Simeone, should they decide to part ways with Liam Rosenior.
Speaking in response to growing speculation around ***CHELSEA***’s long-term direction, Gallas claimed that Simeone would bring “immediate success” to Stamford Bridge thanks to his experience, winning mentality, and proven track record at the highest level. The Argentine has been in charge of Atlético Madrid since 2011, transforming the club into one of Europe’s most competitive sides during his tenure.
Under Simeone, Atlético have won multiple major honours, including La Liga titles and domestic cups, while also reaching two UEFA Champions League finals. His teams are renowned for their defensive discipline, intensity, and tactical organisation—qualities Gallas believes Chelsea currently lack.
The former defender suggested that if Chelsea are serious about returning to consistent success, they should target a manager with a clear identity and a history of delivering results under pressure. Simeone, he argued, fits that profile perfectly and would instantly command respect within the dressing room.
‘Maybe the CHELSEA players need him too because we need to see more warriors and soldiers in the team after what they’ve shown us. I think you need that type of manager who is a little bit more harsh on the players.’ Gallas Said
However, any potential move would be complicated. Simeone remains deeply embedded at Atlético Madrid, where he is one of the longest-serving managers in European football. His influence at the club extends beyond the pitch, and he is widely credited with shaping their modern identity. Reports of interest from other clubs have surfaced in the past, but he has consistently remained loyal to the Spanish side.
As for Rosenior, speculation over his future continues to circulate, although there has been no official confirmation that his position is under immediate threat. The discussion around potential replacements appears, for now, to be largely hypothetical.
WHY THIS MOVE ONT HAPPEN
Despite Gallas’ enthusiasm, a move for Simeone appears highly unrealistic for several reasons. his long-standing commitment to Atlético Madrid cannot be overlooked. Having spent over a decade at the club, he has built a level of control and stability that would be difficult to replicate elsewhere.
