Versatile Barcelona star likely to return to starting XI against Atletico Madrid

Barcelona’s preparations for a decisive La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid have been handed a significant lift, with Eric Garcia now back in contention to return, and potentially start, after his recent injury setback, reports AS.

The versatile Spanish defender has been out of action in recent weeks after struggling with muscle discomfort linked to ongoing hamstring issues that surfaced earlier in March.

His absence was noticeable during Barcelona’s recent fixtures, particularly given how central he has been to Hansi Flick’s system this season.

Now, however, the situation has shifted. Garcia has resumed full training on the pitch over the past few days, and all indications point towards him being available for selection this weekend.

More importantly, there is a strong possibility that he could be thrown straight back into the starting XI.

A key player for Flick

Before his injury, Garcia had become one of Barcelona’s most relied-upon players, featuring almost every time the team took to the field.

His availability and adaptability made him indispensable, especially during a campaign disrupted by injuries across multiple positions.

What sets Garcia apart is not just his consistency, but his tactical versatility. He has effectively operated in several roles depending on the team’s needs.

When Frenkie de Jong was unavailable, Garcia stepped into midfield and on other occasions, he filled in at right-back in the absence of Jules Kounde.

He also played alongside Pau Cubarsi in central defence and has briefly played as a left-back too. This means he has covered all defensive positions this season.

Heading into the Atletico Madrid fixture, Flick faces a selection dilemma, but one that works in Barcelona’s favour.

Where will he play against Atletico?

As per the outlet, Garcia is expected to be the leading option at right-back, particularly as Kounde may not yet be at full match fitness despite returning to the squad.

An alternative would be to deploy Garcia centrally, but that would likely disrupt the current rhythm of Gerard Martin, who has excellent chemistry with Cubarsi.

Given the current balance of the team, it appears far more likely that Garcia will be utilised on the flank.
