Former England defender and prominent broadcaster Gary Neville has sparked fresh transfer speculation after suggesting that London side Chelsea could attempt an ambitious summer move for Mohamed Salah, following the revelation he will leave LIVERPOOL
Speaking on We Are The Overlap, Neville claimed that CHELSEA’s ownership — led by a recruitment model that has already produced several headline-grabbing signings — may be tempted to test Liverpool’s resolve should Salah become available.
Neville described the Egyptian international as a “transformational attacker” still capable of delivering 20-plus goals a season, insisting that a move within the Premier League would not be out of the question despite Salah’s advancing contract situation.
The attacker has been the subject of intense speculation for more than a year, with clubs from the Middle East — particularly from the Saudi Pro League — known to have expressed strong interest. Last summer, LIVERPOOL rejected a record-breaking bid from Al-Ittihad, and further approaches are expected once the transfer window reopens.
Why a Move to Chelsea Remains Highly Unlikely
CHELSEA are focused on a long-term squad rebuild centred around younger talent. The wages and transfer fee required for one of world football’s most marketable forwards sit outside the club’s current recruitment strategy.
More decisively, the Saudi Pro League remains the overwhelmingly likely destination. The league’s financial resources far exceed what any Premier League club would reasonably commit for a player entering the final years of his peak.
Saudi clubs view Salah not merely as a footballer but as a symbolic figure for the region — a marketing and cultural asset whose signing would accelerate their global strategy.
Given the scale of the offers expected, and the clear strategic alignment between Salah’s profile and Saudi ambitions, a move to West London appears improbable. Barring a dramatic shift, the next chapter of Salah’s career seems destined to unfold in the Middle East rather than the Premier League.
