Smith appeared on a recent episode of The Sage Steele Show to discuss his private ballot. He admitted he voted for Kamala Harris but now regrets that choice.

The ESPN star explained that he initially hoped Harris would foster bipartisan cooperation. He believed Congress could pressure her into consensus decisions to help the country move forward together.
Smith told Steele that he is adamantly opposed to one-party rule in Washington. He prefers a divided government where different parties control the White House and the chambers of the American Congress.
He viewed Donald Trump as a uniquely powerful figure who would be harder to restrain. This fear led him to support the Democratic ticket despite his lingering doubts about their platform.
However, the aftermath of the election changed his perspective entirely. He watched how the Democratic Party reacted to their loss and felt they remained completely out of touch with reality.
“And then when I saw how things were unfolding and how out in the clouds the Democratic Party was even after they lost the election, I just said, ‘There’s no hope,’” Smith said.
He criticized the party for failing to understand why voters rejected them. He expressed frustration that leadership still does not get the message sent by the American people last November.
“I said, ‘I don’t know what the hell I was thinking about believing that you all would get it, because you still don’t get it,’” he added show much frustration.

Smith noted he would have happily supported other Republican candidates. He mentioned that he would have voted for Marco Rubio or Nikki Haley in a heartbeat if they had been nominated.
The conversation shifted toward the social pressure Smith feels as a prominent Black man. Steele suggested there is a pull to represent his community and his family through his vote.
Smith acknowledged that this pressure is a human reality that people should be able to admit. He previously called for President Biden to step aside long before the actual election cycle.
